for PLCnext Control we don't have a direct solution yet, however the SMARTRTU AXC (1110435) we will integrate an IEC 61850 Server with the upcoming version 1.06 (close to the release)
Speaking from PLCnext, we've it of course on our list, but we believe that we've with the SMARTRTU a very competitive solution for the energy marked and therefore this device is a bit more in focus.
SmartRTU is a proposal and is a very accurate product if you are looking for paramétrization instead of programming.
If you are more looking for programming : IEC61850 is available over PLCNext thanks to straton by Copa Data .
This solution enables Client and Server communication and of course MMS & GOOSE messaging.
STRATON app allows also some others "energy" communication protocols such as IEC 60870 104.
Please have a look to PLCNext Store : contributor is STRATON AUTOMATION By Copa Data. The apps name is "straton"
Hello colleagues, I would like to find out the current options on this topic. One customer now requests to offer a PLC that can communicate IEC61850, but also via RS485 modbus RTU and 4xAI 0-10V. If I offered him AXC F 2152 and Straton for IEC61850 programming, can the hardware configuration of the added AXL SE cards be done in Straton? Or is it necessary to combine the program in PLCnext Eng and Straton? How do they connect? Is there a tutorial or sample solution?
Thank you for the instructions.
In this instance Straton is just used as a communications interface for 61850 and everything else is handled in PLCnext.
Another option may be to look at running CODESYS on the AXC2152. This would give you a single PLC system that recently just got IEC61850 server support and also supports smart elements.
Hello, thank you very much. I will find a lot of useful information under the links, which you sended me.
Could you tell me before I have to order a Straton editor license, how much can I do without that license? I found information that the license costs almost 800 Euros, right?
Thanks, Roman
- The essence of IEC61850 is the logical node which enables communications between manufacturers (Phoenix Contact, Siemens, ABB...) . To integrate third party librairy means to work on “something” maybe not “up-to-date” or not “maintainable” over the years. The best solution remains third party software, the software is updated with new features once a year and comes along with a support line. Is it affordable? This is always the question, on single license costs little bit less that 800€ but so straton decreases its price for large project. You may write to straton.
- The post on the community shows a solution with two editors ( Plcnext Engineer + straton) working on the same PLC. Please note that straton team developed some drivers for axioline modules (DI – DO – AI – DOR), that’s working well. That means if your case requires only digital imput or outputs, there is no need to do any programming over PLCnext Engineer. Straton editor is fine enough. Last info, for application requesting a second mac address, straton team tested the AXC XT ETH 1TX device and that works well.

I currently have a PLCnext AXC F 2152 with the Straton Plugin to be able to using the IEC61850 protocol. Is there a way to connect the I/O's from the PLCnext directly to the Starton environment? I'm using 3 DI AXL F DI8/2 110/220DC 1F and 2 DO AXL F DOR4/2 AC/220DC 1F.

With regards to PLCnext and Straton, there were 2 makers blogs which should answer most of your questions posted earlier this year:

Are there any manuals available?
... from 2023 on, there is the Stack available for IEC 61850 in the App-Store (only 100 bugs :-).

Hey franko,
I hope you mean 100 bucks (or 100$, 100€)! ;-)
The stack itself has been running extremely reliably for years in a large number of bay controllers and gateways in high voltage substations.
And it is now available for the PLCnext Ecosystem :-)

Does it support Goose in Publisher and Subscriber mode? Can it send and recieve goose messages.
