Ethernet/IP Master (Scanner)

Good day,

I Need some assistance in setting up the AXC F 2152 as Ethernet/IP Master.

I need to read data from a Rexroth S20 Bus coupler.

I have tried setting up the ethernet/ip gateway from the PLCNext Store, however, it does not seem to be what I need.

Is this at all possible?

  • Currently the AXC F 2152 can operate as an Ethernet/IP device, but not a master.
The Store app you mention uses this device capability, and (you're correct) doesn't add master capability.
  • How about running CODESYS or Straton on PLCnext? Should be possible there?
Not sure how it would then interface to PLCnext Engineer though...
  • I don't know if either of those products implements an Ethernet/IP master.
CODESYS is intended as an alternative to PLCnext Engineer, and the two PLC runtimes (Codesys and the Phoenix Contact) cannot be used together on one device.
You should check the capabilities of the Straton app with the developers, using the "Contact" button on their product page in the PLCnext Store.
  • FYI I've looked into both CODESYS and Straton and both do offer EtherNet/IP Scanner(Master) drivers, however, in my test setup I used an Inline EIP bus coupler which in CODESYS I found it would intermittently interrupt comms every couple of minutes. Straton seemed stable. I don't know if this has something to do with the bus coupler or something else as I have also tested our QUINT4 EIP UPS and that seemed ok on both platforms.
    Needs more testing....
  • Is this still not an option in any of the AXC F range ? Really want to replace a lot of PLC's with PLCNEXT but I need the master capability. Seems like a feature that should have been added a year down the track.

  • Ethernet/IP Scanner (Master) capability is not currently on the feature roadmap, and I don't have any information about if or when this might appear. If Profinet is not a suitable alternative for some reason, please discuss your requirements with your local Phoenix Contact sales person, and they will pass the relevant details to the Product Managers. If there is enough demand, then that will help to prioritise this feature.

  • Ethernet IP has currently more of the market then Profinet, Majority of PLC's on the market are doing it or moving to doing it. I think a post on your forum should be enough to consider adding to potential features.

A majority of potential customers will look at a feature list see something missing, google a post like this and see the product has no intention of adding it, then walk away. I have at least brought the need to your attention and you have brushed me off.

  • I'm sorry if you feel like I've brushed you off. That wasn't my intention.

Phoenix Contact is a large company, and unfortunately in my Technical Support role I don't have any influence over what features are included in our products. Our Product Managers are aware of the relative popularity of various fieldbuses in our target markets. Since they don't have limitless resources, they need to decide on the priority of various features. I have suggested a way forward - if you discuss this with the people in your local Phoenix Contact office, then they can get a detailed understanding of the opportunity and then advocate for the required features using our standard internal processes. This is the best way to get new features added to the PLCnext Runtime. If you are having trouble contacting the right person in your local Phoenix Contact office, please email me at mboers at phoenixcontact dot com, and I will try to help.
