PLCnext - Remote Download and Troubleshooting via Internet

Dear All,

Can someone explain shortly what I need to build remote access via internet, not for data access but for remote download and troubleshoot the program. So we can change or modify program on site from the office.

What part I required? Thanks.

  • Hi

The easy way is to install IXON Cloud connector from PLCnext Store. It will require a license for about 120-130Eur from IXON (one time), but then you can remote connect to the controller. (not a HMI connected there using a nother software than eHMI HTML5 from PLCnext Engineer)

Otherwise you need a VPN router, fx. IXON Cloud Router, Secomea, Mguard and so on.

  • Thanks. What is advantage and disadvantage between both  IXON Cloud connector and VPN?

Which is more recommended and robust? Let say my Project is installed onboard ship.

  • Hi

IXON Cloud connector is just a software VPN, it's the same as the IX Router fx. but the IX router is a hardware.

On ships i think i can be a problem to provide internet all the time?
But i will say contact some of the company's and ask them for a solution.

  • For marine grade hardware I have heard of some success with mGuard devices - they have a plethora of hardware and connectivity options. Of course that's a great question for the Phoenix guys - Does PLCnext have any integration with mGuard?

(scratch that, I just read far enough in the forums to see the issues with PLCnext Engineer and mGuard - seems like this is not recommended at this time)

Alternatively, wireguard might be worth looking into. I don't know if anyone has been succesful in running it on PLCnext though?

  • mGuard - seems like this is not recommended at this time

Just to clarify, an earlier thread was tracking an ongoing problem with the performance of PLCnext Engineer over VPNs, but this problem was addressed in the latest release of PLCnext Engineer, and so far the reports we have received on this version are positive. So we can (tentatively) say that this problem is solved.

In any case, that problem was never with mGuard security routers or the mGuard secure cloud service, so in fairness to my colleagues in the mGuard team, we can enthusiastically recommend the use of mGuard products.

As Emil mentions, the IXON Cloud connector uses the PLC as a VPN client. There is also an app currently under development that will connect a PLCnext Control device directly to the mGuard Secure Cloud service, without the need for any other mGuard hardware.

  • Hello Martin,

Regarding the app to connect PLCnext to mGuard Secure Cloud, do you know when will this app be released ?

Do you know if with the connection between PLCnext and mGuard Secure Cloud  will be possible to access others devices connected to PLCnext, like to use the PLCnext as router, or the idea is to access only the PLCnext ?

    Thank you,

    Sidnei

  • Hi Sidnei,

the release of the MGuard Secure Cloud App is planned for mid of July.

    Cheers,

    Frank
