PLCnext equivalent for TIA Portal Data Blocks

I recently started using PLCnext Engineer. As a TIA Portal user, I am wondering what the equivalent of the TIA Portal Data Blocks are in PLCnext Engineer.

Upfront thanks!

  • As far as I am aware the concept of "data blocks" used by Siemens PLCs (going back to the S5 days) is not mentioned in the IEC 61131 standard.

In PLCnext Engineer, variables can be declared in the Global Variable Table - which would be the closest thing to data in Siemens global DBs - or in the Variable table of POUs (programs, functions and function blocks), like you can also do in Siemens PLCs. You don't need to specify an Instance DB like you do in Siemens - it all happens in the background, which is a much better idea. This will be familiar to users of other IEC 61131 compliant software like Codesys.
