Modbus RTU to Profinet Gateway - modbus slave status

hi, I'm using a GW PN/Modbus gateway and was wondering if there is way to monitor/read the comms active status of the modbus slaves in the PLC ?

The issue I'm having is that if the serial connection is lost between the gateway and the slave device the data gets stalled and the PLC won't know that since there is no heartbeat or watchdog implemented on the modbus device .
