Multiple Configurations of Smart Elements

I figure this might be a long shot, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

I have a system with a bunch of products in the field. I'm considering adding an additional smart element (I have room on my backplane), specifically the 1088106 (RTD Transducer).

Ideally, I'd like to be able to upload a PLCNext Engineer project that has this element configured to systems that either have this module or don't have this module installed. In this ideal world, I'd be able to slowly roll out retrofitting this module on all systems, while still being able to update systems with fresher firmware. It wouldn't be a problem of the temperature data from the module is missing for systems that don't have the module yet, as it is just diagnostic information.

In my memory though, it throws an error if you have an unconfigured module in your system (at least when using the SPLC1000).

Thanks in advance,

Ethan

  • Hey Ethan,

It's not really possible to get the IO functionality you're looking for here. The controller will throw an error when the IO configuration is not correct. The best way to approach this would probably be to have 2 programs. One with the RTD module and logic and one without.

I hope this helps! Feel free to reach out to our Technical Service department here in the US for some more support!
